stuff I don't need

I thought I was without a calendar at the beginning of the month, and so wondered about what my calendar theme should be for the year-that is, when I made the trip to the store to pick one out.

Dogs? Flowers? Beautiful scenes of photography? The list in my mind went on and on.

I thought a prayer was answered when I read the blog of a photographer who was giving away some calendars she made for Christmas gifts because she made too many. Giving away (FREEEEEEE!!!) makes my cheap heart smile. And any calendar of cute photographs from a good photographer makes my heart smile also.

And so, I left a comment on the blog of said photographer and told her why yes, I'd love one. She very sweetly sent one to me. This arrived in the mail.

Mind you, the design is nice on the front, the pictures are great and the pages are nicely laid out.  See what I mean?

With all things to possibly complain about in the world, this should not be one of them, right?

 Weeeeeell.....

Silly me should have asked said photographer (before she mailed it to me) if I could hang this on the wall. I did not even think about this small, teensy, tiny fact. That is, until it arrived.

The calendar is pocket sized!!! Woops!

I was fortunate to remember that my insurance agent for my homeowners policy sends me a calendar every year for Christmas-one that I can hang on the wall. I found that package promptly and put it up.

And now, I wonder what in the world to do with this calendar. I should probably just toss it since I have a day planner and a calendar on the wall now. Something in me just doesn't have the heart to right now though.

Oh, what to do, what to do........

I'm on a kick!

Don't even try to stop me now! Why, you ask?

 I'm on a kick-an organizing kick!

It seems that something in me is SCREAMING to organize my life. I mean letting out a primal, no holds barred SCREAM. It's as if my psyche is saying that my days of disorganization are done with a captial D!

And what am I organizing now, you ask?

 Why my e-mails, of course!

I debated doing this, because part of me thinks this is bordering on OCD analness. After all, what in the friggin hell am I going to do with over 17,000 e-mails??!! Yes, I said that correctly-over seventeen thousand.

 The answer? Deletedeletedelete........

Part of this was needed, as I also had over 1,000 e-mails that I had not even read. Yes. you read that correctly-one-thousand. If I hadn't read them by now, ain't never gonna happen. Yes, they also went deletedeletedeletedelete. Why in the world did I let this happen?

I'm not deleting all of them, of course (just a good majority of them.....). I'm saving what I need to in folders divided by subject-and the rest?

 Buh-bye!

It's time consuming to do this, yet liberating also. I don't need to save every single e-mail sent to me by friends. I also don't need junk mail either. Let me reiterate though that it's time consuming! I have 8,000 + e-mails to go! Yikes!

I think that something in my psyche wants me to clean house and get rid of the excess baggage that is all around me-including my unnecessary e-mails. I just wonder what area of my life is next?

 All guesses are welcomed. :)

One Little Word 2011

Ali Edwards always has a theme word of the year that is poignant and is a guide to accomplish what needs to be accomplished in a year. I always thought that was sorta cool, but never really thought of a word myself.

 That is, until this year.

It's kinda late, but my One Little Word for 2011 is:

 Accomplish

I tried to find a picture in my albums that symbolizes accomplishment, but nothing seemed to fit. How do you symbolize accomplishment in a photo of trees, buildings and "foofy" stuff? I guess I have to get on that this year.......

I have so much that I want to accomplish this year. Personal, professional and on and on.

I guess now is the time to get crackin' on it.

 Time to accomplish!

Operation Condo Clean: the evidence of cleanliness :)

*Warning* This is a LONG post. LONG.

"I hate housework! You make the beds, you do the dishes and six months later you have to start all over again."  Joan Rivers

 I'm a hard worker.

I'm honest. I'm kind. Hell, I'm bordering on perfect. ;)

Except when it comes to one thing.

 My house cleaning skills.

To say that the above quote fits me to a tee (Even though I think Joan Rivers is a loud-mouthed, foul, Michael Jackson wanna be) is an understatement. I used to joke that me cleaning is like Dr. Ruth not having an accent. We didn't fit.

There are many reasons why I developed this, um, not so positive trait. And I will delve into none of them here. What I want to focus on is the fact that I woke up. I saw the light.

(And the light produces some funky dreams. Read on to find out why...)

Being that I got sick of the mess that I let pile up, I decided at the end of 2010 that I would let the mess go no further. It was time to take action. It was time for

Operation Condo Clean

(Cue ominous sounding music...)

Operation Condo Clean went smoothly throughout my living room, dining area, kitchen and bathroom. (They were obviously not that bad.) It wasn't until I hit my bedroom that I really realized how out of hand I let things get.

Oh hell. What I found boggles the mind.

Needless to say, I let this room be the catch-all and would simply shut the door if I had people over.

Baaad idea. Bad, bad, bad idea.

Allow me to tell you why.....

Exhibit A: My first set of business in my bedroom was to take care of that thing called my jewelry box. I have been given so much jewelry for Christmas and birthdays that the box could not even close. Honestly, I did not even like some of the jewelry and had not ever worn it. I knew that it needed to go. Here is a picture of the piles of jewelry. (Bigger pile=to keep; Smaller pile=to not keep)

(And yes, this is the only picture that you will see of my mess.)

Exhibit B: I actually had these hard disks from my college days. Note: I graduated from college almost 13 years ago. (I was obviously a Communications major.) Plus, these disks do not even go in modern computers!  It did bring back a moment of nostalgia to see the disks I used to write stories for a local newspaper and an obituary about this colorful figure. However, they are useless now. So, I bid them buh-bye and off they went into the trash.

Exhibit C: Ohhhhhhhh, did I do a TON of this. In fact, my shredder boarded the crazy train right when I was done. I was very happy it pooped out when it did!

Exhibit D: I worked out of this box to sort, toss and laugh at what I found. (I will not embarass myself even more with letting the world know everything I found. Let's just say one of my items was a paper of a phone number of a person who moved to Texas over 5 years ago.....)

But look at some of the fun stuff I found!

Exhibit E: Remember these, Robyn?

Exhibit F: A pen I got for a wedding favor when I attended a wedding in Mexico.

Exhibit G: My card holder! This neat little box holds all my birthday cards, anniversary cards, etc., for a whole year!

And look at what my place looks like now that it is clean!

My living room (Disregard the paint stains. I need to finish that up next weekend.)

Kitchen

Dining Area (Disregard the ladder. I need to replace a burnt out lightbulb this evening from my light fixture.)

I couldn't get a decent shot of my bathroom. Let's just say it's clean. (And yes, WD-40 belongs in all bathrooms! :) )

Bedroom shot #1: to prove I can walk in there....

Bedroom shot #2: I can walk over here too! (The dust has since been taken care of...)

Bedroom shot #3: I can walk over here too!
I had a shot of my walk-in closet, but I think the point has been made. Slob no more. I am no longer embarrassed to have y'all over.

The funny thing about this cleaning process is that once I was nearing the end, I began to have the most vivid, funky dreams imaginable! They are so funky that I could write a whole blog about them! I wonder what my mind is trying to tell me?

I know that the difficult part about all this will be keeping up with the cleaning. And so, to accomplish that, I will do a blog post once a month showing pictures of my place.

I don't want to live like that ever again.

 I mean it.

There's just something about 'em......

I think it has to do with getting older.

 I really do.

I don't think I would have smiled this much when I was younger.

I discovered a CD this evening during Operation Condo Clean (post to come.....) that is just so priceless. I knew that I had this CD, but where was the question. :) It was a CD of old photos that my dad had burned  for practically everyone in the family of pictures Grandma Tearjen had. Grandma would be 94 if still alive today, so a lot of the pictures that my dad scanned are 100+ years old. Not all, but a lot, I assume.

I just knew the evening that Grandma passed away seven years ago that I needed to grab her pictures. Grandma had told me once that she would keep all her photos in a grocery shopping bag in the event of a fire so that she could grab them in a hurry. And God love her, that's exactly what she did.

They were in her closet. The one on the right hand side. Front and center. And before I left her house that evening, I grabbed them. Something told me to do it. And so, I did. It wasn't a malicious grab, but one that I considered necessary. I just didn't want these photos to be considered trash to be tossed (And Lord, did trash get tossed from that house before it got sold...). They then sat in my dad's den for the next few years while he scanned photos from that grocery bag every so often. CD's were burned once he was done and passed out in the family-including me. I'm glad. I really am.

And would you believe that I finally popped the CD in my computer this evening and perused its contents? I don't want to tell you how many years ago I got the CD!

I want to share a few now:

My Armenian Grandma and Grandpa on their wedding day in the 1930s.

I'm a little bit of a photography buff, so I'm loving the style of this potrait of my great grandmother and Grandma taken almost 95 years ago.

And last but not least, I had to include a picture that included yours truly, my sister and my cousin. The date on the back of the picture says 1976. I love the '70s colors! :)
I don't think that I would have truly appreciated looking at these until I hit the point that I'm at now. There's just something precious about memories.

They mean more when you're older.

travel dreams

 I can't sleep. Therefore, I blog.....

I have to admit that I've been thinking a lot about travelling lately. It has been awhile since I have adventured. In fact, it's long overdue. I miss airport layovers, strangely enough. I miss going to tourist traps, such as this place. ( Besides being a touristy, money making hell, it's still neat to see though.) I also miss being amazed by sites such as this. (I saw it when it was an exhibit at a museum in Florida.)

My cheap self used to travel yearly and stay with friends in other states. :)  It was awesome to go to a scrapbooking convention in another state. I can also proudly state that I've driven past the area in Memphis where Elvis Presley lived before moving to Graceland. And on and on.

And then...... I bought a home. I got laid off from my long time job. The economy happened to me, and it's a slow process back to where I was before income wise. (Can we say pay cuts?) That being said, the money once spent on travel time is being spent on other necessities right now. (Sigh...... I need a new career......)

I do have a goal though that I would like to see all 50 states before I go to the great beyond. Of course, I would also like to do more travelling outside the U.S.

To places such as this:

In the U.S., I'd like to see this, among other spots:

 and these:

  and this some Fall:

Also, I don't know why, but I always have wanted to go to this place since I was a kid. I of course would also like to see this, and this place. (I have only been to this state on a layover, so it would be nice to actually see some of it instead of sitting in an airport!)

And so, I guess it's time to figure out what to do so that I can make these trips happen!

What are your travel dreams, readers?

Happy 1-1-11!

 Happy 1-1-11!

One of the things I like about the city I live in is that they have a great deal of hiking trails. So, to start the year off on a healthy foot, I decided to hike one of them today! Too bad I didn't stop for gas first since I was already running low, but oh well, you live and you learn. (And AAA is $7 richer because they had to bring me gas...)

This trail is right in back of the restaurant (and park) that my sister got married at. Too bad that she and my (now ex) brother-in-law never took any pictures on this trail, because it really has some great views at the top. Here are some pictues from my hike:

If you sqint (lol) or maybe click on this picture, you can see that the LA skyline is visible from the top of this hill. It was obviously a great day to hike this trail, because the views were great.

Beautiful sky

Note to self: buy new pair of sunglasses! Squinty eyes are not becoming! :)

Up the hill....
This was a great way to start the new year, and I will continue finding different trails throughout 2011.

 Happy New Year, all!
